In a world where education opens doors, scholarship is the key that unlocks countless opportunities. Many might think that scholarships are only for a selected few people but they are accessible to everyone willing to work hard and reach for their goals.


Scholarships are not just about academic excellence, although that is certainly one way to qualify. They can also be based on financial need, athletic ability, community service, or even unique hobbies. There are scholarships for students with disabilities, scholarships for first-generation college students, and scholarships for students from underrepresented communities. In short, there is a scholarship for almost everyone—it's just a matter of finding the right one. 


Types of scholarships 

There are many different forms of scholarships available. Each of them is meant for different individuals’ backgrounds and aspirations. Understanding the difference between scholarships is the key to reaching the perfect scholarship available for you. 


  1. Merit-based scholarships

When people hear the word “scholarship”, most would think of the Merit-based scholarship. It’s the most well-known scholarship, rewarding students for their academic achievements. Merit-based scholarships are divided into four specific categories; Scholarships for excellent academic results, scholarships for research achievements, scholarships for artistic achievements, and scholarships for athletic achievements. 


  1. Need-based scholarships, for students with low incomes

These types of scholarships are meant for students with low income. It’s a chance for them to get a shot at higher education. It’s important to realize the potential of many disadvantaged students to help break the cycle of poverty in their families and in order to improve their lives and community. 


  1. Scholarships for all international students

Many students choose to study outside of their home countries. Recognizing this, many institutions around the world offer scholarships specifically for international students willing to study abroad. 




Myths and misconceptions about scholarships

Although there are many types of scholarships available, some still believe in myths and misconceptions about scholarships. Causing students to hesitate when exploring these opportunities. 


  • Scholarships are only for certain students Scholarships are awarded and available to all types of students. Not just perfect-scoring students, top athletes, or low-income students. Always remember not to worry about not being good enough. There are scholarships for everybody.


  • There’s too much competition for scholarships. There may be scholarships with stiff competition, but there are over a million other scholarships that you can apply to. You can increase your chances of getting a scholarship by reading the directions of each scholarship. 


  • It’s too hard to apply for scholarships Although it is important to work hard to achieve a scholarship, not all of them make you jump through hoops to apply. Create a spreadsheet and list all the requirements to apply. Many scholarships don’t ask you to create an essay or show financial information.


Take your time to do your research. Work hard with dedication and believe in yourself. Remember, scholarships are for everyone, all it takes is the courage to pursue them.
