Good morning and happy weekend,
As we come together to celebrate Pancasila Day on June 1, 2024, we reflect on the profound principles that form the bedrock of Indonesia's national ideology. Pancasila, consisting of five foundational principles, is more than just a set of guidelines; it is a philosophy that unites a diverse archipelago of 17,508 islands, hundreds of ethnic groups, and many languages.
What is Pancasila?
Pancasila was first introduced by Indonesia’s founding father, Soekarno, on June 1, 1945, in a speech to the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI). The term "Pancasila" is derived from two Old Javanese words: "panca" meaning five and "sila" meaning principles. The five principles are:
Belief in One Supreme God (Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa)
Just and Civilized Humanity (Kemanusiaan yang Adil dan Beradab)
The Unity of Indonesia (Persatuan Indonesia)
Democracy Guided by the Inner Wisdom of Deliberations Amongst Representatives (Kerakyatan yang Dipimpin oleh Hikmat Kebijaksanaan dalam Permusyawaratan/Perwakilan)
Social Justice for All Indonesians (Keadilan Sosial bagi Seluruh Rakyat Indonesia)
Meaning of this year’s theme
'Pancasila: The Unifying Spirit of the Nation Towards a Golden Indonesia 2045' is the subject for Pancasila Day 2024. The significance of Pancasila as the unifying factor guiding Indonesia towards a prosperous future is emphasized by this theme. A Golden Indonesia 2045 is a long-term plan to make the country affluent and advanced by the time of Indonesia's 100th anniversary of independence.
Pancasila as the Nation’s Identity
In addition to being the state's foundation, Pancasila also represents the identity of the Indonesian people. The diversity of Indonesian culture, religion, and customs is reflected in the way that Pancasila values influence every facet of society. Pancasila encourages us to coexist peacefully, to value diversity, and to work together for a better future. As the Indonesian people confront the challenges of globalization and changing times, Pancasila continues to be important as a moral and ethical compass.
Pancasila Day Celebration
Pancasila Day will be celebrated this year in the National Monument Square in Central Jakarta. State officials, community leaders, invited guests, and the president and vice president of the Republic of Indonesia will be in attendance. A 300-meter-long Indonesian flag will be displayed during the Pancasila procession organized by the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP). A number of participants will also hold artistic and cultural performances to spice up the event.
In addition, official ceremonies in government facilities, universities, and schools are held nationwide as part of commemorative events, during which attendees are asked to reflect on the significance and implementation of Pancasila in their daily lives. Usually, it will be followed by enjoyable activities like traditional games, cultural festivals, and other events.
Warm regards,
