Coming Out of Your Shell : Why Studying Abroad is Your Life-Changer

Written by Kezia

Studying abroad is a dream to a lot of people. But leaving for a place hundreds, and even thousands of miles away from your hometown is surely a huge step for everyone. You may be faced with so many fears : What if I don’t fit in? What if I’m homesick? What if I can’t survive? What if it’s really hard I can’t make it out? And all the other million what-ifs. Sure, those questions are valid. Studying abroad means you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, staying in a country with a culture, people, and everything so different from what you know, and those changes are so scary. But the doors are open wide, and if you didn’t take the chance now, wouldn’t you be questioning what will happen for the rest of your life?

In fact, studying abroad comes with an array of benefits. One that will make you look back and thank yourself for taking the opportunity, and here’s why :

1. Seeing the world

Being in a new country means you’re gonna meet people with different backgrounds, different ways of life, and different – everything. When you’re moving into a new country, you will be able to experience new cultures, learn to communicate in a different language, experience everything the country has to offer, and just experience a bigger world than what you always knew.

2. Finding new interests, and finding your path

When it comes to studying abroad, one of the main benefits comes from learning to study under another style of education. You will also get to take a lot of courses, ones that aren't available in your home country. Or you could also find out some new talents and interests of yours! One you will never know about if you stayed home. Being immersed in your host country’s education scene is the best way to learn about its people, its culture, and its traditions.

3. Career opportunities

In a fast-changing world, and an ever-so-competitive work field, an international study experience may turn heads in your application as it shows that you’re adaptable and able. Whether you choose to return home, where you will come back with a new perspective of the world and life, or if you choose to work in your host country (where it will be fairly easier to land a job since you studied there), studying abroad will teach you all the skills you need, along with resilience and creativity on the way, and you’ll come back as a valuable asset to your future institutions.

4. Meeting long-life friends

The friends you meet along the way in your host country will be a very good networking tool later on. However, some of them will probably stick as your personal lifeline, even years after you leave the country. You can even meet people from your hometown while you study, and they could be the people you hold on to the most, as they are the closest thing to “home” for you. Here’s why studying abroad can be very rewarding for you.

5. You will grow, and you will glow!

When studying abroad, you will see how independent you can be! Being in a place that’s not home can be super overwhelming at times, but see it as a chance to get used to your new place too! After all, you earned the opportunity so it’s yours to enjoy. Studying abroad will really tell you what kind of person you are and how far you can go. It will be a rewarding and transforming experience that you can only get once in a lifetime.

As one day you will be this world’s future leader, you need to feel at home in its fast-changing and ever-evolving nature. The first step to do that is by studying abroad. It does not only give you a new academic setting in which you can grow through, but it will also lead you on a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and growth. So if the door is wide open for you, have the courage and take the chance! Cause in the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take, right?
